The Nevada Council for History Education is dedicated to promoting the study of history in our public schools

Dear SNCSS Members,

Greetings to everyone as we begin the 2007-2008 school year!  As we settle into our daily school routines, it is time to get SNCSS off and running.  The year ahead holds many great opportunities for Southern Nevada social studies teachers.

First off, we will be holding our Fall Social on Wednesday, October 24th from 4:30-6:30 at McMullan’s Irish Pub.  While we enjoy great food and drinks provided by Nancy Kjenstad of Houghton-Mifflin, we will be discussing many great opportunities, giving away prizes, and testing our minds with historical trivia.

Another great opportunity awaits SNCSS members as the NCSS National Conference will be on the west coast this year.  Beautiful San Diego, CA is the conference locale and the dates are November 30-December 2.  Conference information can be obtained at www.ncss.org

Lastly, SNCSS will be joining UNLV’s Literacy Team and hosting a spring Literacy and Social Studies Conference.  April 11-12, 2008 will bring fabulous guest speakers, K-12 teacher presenters, and a plethora of resources for area literacy and social studies educators.

On a personal note, my goals this year as President of the Southern Nevada Council for Social Studies are to increase membership and provide a variety of professional development opportunities to enhance social studies education in Nevada.  I look forward to working with all of you and making the 2007-2008 school year one of the best.

 Best,

 Karlye Mull
